W. Scott Harper, MS, CWE
Managing Partner, Beverage Director
To say that Scott Harper is a wine aficionado would be an understatement. The man lives and breathes wine. The roots for his love of wine go way back to before he was legally old enough to enjoy a glass. He worked in a restaurant as a teenager with a wine list written entirely in Italian. He grew curious about what the foreign words meant. Around that time he bought his first book on wine. and quickly became immersed. He studied everything from history and geography of wine, the science behind wine-making and most importantly the language. Harper began working for the Bristol Bar & Grille in 1991, and currently serves as vice president. He also oversees the award-winning wine programs for all five Bristol locations in and around Louisville, KY. He is a Certified Wine Educator (CWE), the highest level of recognition of the Society of Wine Educators. It acknowledges his exceptional standard of both academic knowledge and sensory capability in the field of wine. Harper is also a Master Sommelier, earning the honor after passing the fourth level of exams in July 2009. The Master Sommelier title is considered to be the ultimate professional wine accomplishment. Approximately 5 percent of Master Sommelier candidates pass the final diploma exam. In an effort to educate and give back, Harper teaches wine courses at Bellarmine University. The Court of Master Sommeliers selected Harper for its Mariani Wine Enrichment program in Italy. He is a member of the Society of Wine Educators and is licensed through the French Wine Society to teach the curriculum of the French Wine Academy and writes about wine for Sophisticated Living and Food and Dining magazines. Harper is also a recipient of the Banfi Award, given for passing his CWE exam on the first sitting, with the highest score. At home, Scott likes to relax, have fun and spend time with his wife and three dogs.
